Throughout the New Testament, we are presented
with specific “how-to’s” for having an intimate and personal relationship with God through his son Jesus.
When we take up following him, he leads us into that relationship for which the human heart hungers. You will be presented momentarily
with a prayer you can express, when you so desire, that will cause that relationship with him to begin. It is a prayer you
can pray anytime you sense your heart is ready.
Before you would consider doing that,
however, we’d like you to be familiar with statements the Bible makes upon which the prayer is based. Please keep in
mind as you review these that God who fashioned you wants to have a loving link with your heart and life. When you find yourself
ready to move toward him in this fashion through Jesus Christ, know that it is not our specific words that he hears us speak
that move him to respond to us. Instead it is our motives, thoughts, and feelings behind that prayer that do!
.
“God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believers
in him should not perish, but have eternal life. God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save
the world through him.” John 3:16-17
.
“This is eternal life: that we might know him … the only true God, and Jesus
Christ, whom God has sent.” John 17:3
.
“All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The wages or result of sin
is death. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans
3:23 and 6:23
. “God keeps on demonstrating his love
toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans
5:8
. “Jesus said, ‘I am the way,
the truth, and the life. No man comes unto the Father but by me.’ ” John 14:6
.
“As many as receive him, to them he gives the right to become children of God, even
to those who believe in his name.” John 1:12
. “For by grace we are saved through
faith. It is not of ourselves. It is a gift of God. It is not the result of anything we do so that no one can boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9
At the end of the Bible, one quotes
Jesus as putting all of this together in the form of an invitation to follow him. Jesus said—speaking of himself wanting
to gain entrance into our lives, “I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will
come into him.” Revelation 3:20 At another
time, and in another place, Jesus referred to this movement toward him as our being “born again” or having a new
birth. John 3:1-8
Acting upon these
life giving statements, you could begin following Jesus at this very moment. If the following prayer expresses what you feel,
we invite you in the solitude of this very moment at your computer to say something like this:
Jesus, I want
to know you and your Father in a personal way and intimate way.
Thank you for dying on the cross so my sin could be forgiven making it
possible for me to relate to my Father in heaven.
I open "the door of my life" and receive you as my Savior and Lord.
Thank you for forgiving me. Thank you for
giving me eternal life.
Please begin making me the person you've always had in mind for me to be. Thank you. Amen.
If you express this
prayer and want to share it with someone who can pray with you and wants to encourage you, click on the following link and
let us know what you have done. We want to share your joy with you!
I want someone to celebrate with me what I've just done.
