Many
enter the workplace daily feeling a rift between the exercise of their faith and the fulfillment of their professional responsibilities.
They feel almost as if they’re two people—the person they know themselves to be at home or church, and the other
they take with them to their office or into the boardroom. It seems to them that there is no real correlation between what’s
in their heart and how it gets expressed in their corporate environment. Many see little eternal purpose in what they do.
The result is often dissatisfaction and a longing for something else. Many achieve coveted positions within their corporation
or firm, perhaps even find themselves at the top, only to discover that the position they had once hoped to gain is lonelier,
more demanding, and less fulfilling than the one preceding it. The disillusionment that can come from an array of things can
quickly cloud one's entire perspective so that it impacts every other aspect of his or her life. Even though that’s
how it often unfolds, it doesn’t have to be that way.
In most instances, God has placed individuals right where they find themselves . . . for a least one reason,
if for no other . . . to be “salt and light” to those around them. Besides this, the Bible also states that God
grants people their work as a gift. The Bible further reveals that God’s desire for all of us is to derive contentment
and satisfaction from the work we do . . . whatever that might be. Yet the harsh reality for many is this: When they walk
the journey alone or in isolation, without the friendship and support of someone else of like mind or passion, it’s
much easier for them to become dissatisfied with both their situation and setting, and lose interest in the very thing God
specifically wants them to be doing.
